Fire chiefs in New Brunswick stressed the importance of public preparedness during a conference, emphasizing that last year’s wildfire challenges highlighted the need for community involvement alongside frontline firefighting. With dry conditions returning, municipal resources are at risk as they face potential wildfires similar to last year’s spike of 39 in a single week.
Scott Poupart, president of the New Brunswick Association of Fire Chiefs, urged residents to engage in the provincial FireSmart program, which includes clearing combustible materials, maintaining lawns, and creating evacuation plans. Roger Pitre, the association’s vice-president, noted that fires often start from embers carried by wind rather than direct flames.
The shift in climate conditions makes preparedness increasingly crucial. Additionally, communication issues during past emergencies prompted the adoption of the Voyent Alert app for timely notifications about wildfires and evacuations, aimed at enhancing public safety.
