The Chesapeake Bay Foundation’s “Roots to Reef” initiative has advanced significantly with the deployment of 650 Natrx Basalt Shell Bags in the Hampton River, enhancing climate resilience. These innovative, bio-compatible bags provide a stable environment for oyster growth and contribute to building the largest living shoreline alongside oyster reefs. The project also includes the installation of 5,584 oyster castles, recycled shells, coconut fiber logs, and native plants, creating a natural buffer that filters pollutants and supports marine life. Natrx’s basalt shell bags, made from volcanic rock, improve water flow and offer erosion protection, showcasing effective nature-based solutions for coastal communities facing climate change. This effort marks collaboration between CBF’s Oyster and Urban Restoration Teams.
