State and federal agencies plan to invest $22 million in the Big River watershed to address lead contamination and protect the environment, landowners, and public health. A public meeting on June 26 shared a draft restoration plan, which includes six alternatives for remediation, emphasizing a holistic approach (Alternative F) as preferred. This initiative responds to historical contamination from mining activities, particularly affecting Jefferson County and neighboring regions.

The plan will stabilize stream banks, restore habitats, and involve voluntary participation from landowners. Feedback on the proposal is accepted until July 19, and the final plan will be publicly released afterward. Funding comes from a bankruptcy settlement aimed at cleaning contaminated sites across the U.S. Efforts will focus on various locations to enhance safety and ecosystem health in the river.
