Lynchburg Water Resources has completed a $22 million dam removal and stream restoration project at College Lake near the University of Lynchburg. The dam was removed to eliminate its high-hazard status and reduce flood risks following its overtopping in August 2018. Water quality manager Erin Hawkins noted the significant safety improvements from the removal, which had required evacuations in 2018. The project has restored Blackwater Creek’s flow, reconnecting upstream and downstream areas for the first time in 90 years, and has created new wetlands to enhance water quality and wildlife habitats. This initiative marks a significant step in local environmental restoration efforts.
