The Brandywine River Restoration Trust has begun dismantling the DuPont Experimental Station Dam to help migrating fish, especially shad, swim further upstream. Known as Dam 6, its removal is part of a larger project aimed at reconnecting 11 miles of river, enhancing biodiversity and reducing flooding. Executive director Jim Shanahan noted that this restoration mimics the river’s conditions 300 years ago. Benefits will include increased wildlife diversity, with more ospreys and improved habitat for freshwater mussels, which filter the river. The initiative is supported by various funding sources, including the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation.
