The Alberta government is simplifying the watershed restoration process by eliminating the need for a temporary diversion licence for riparian restoration projects. This change is expected to reduce bureaucratic delays, keep newly planted vegetation alive, and efficiently allocate resources for restoring rivers, creeks, and lakes. Environment Minister Rebecca Schulz emphasized the importance of cutting red tape to enable practical restoration efforts. The removal of licensing requirements aims to reduce costs for small companies, prevent plant death due to water shortages, and allow projects to adapt to changing conditions. The exemption applies to small projects using up to 100 cubic metres of water daily, supporting healthy ecosystems and improving water quality.
