The BurnBot is a remote-controlled vehicle designed for wildfire risk reduction by burning flammable vegetation with precision. Although slow, at 0.5 mph, it operates safely in fire-prone areas, creating fire breaks without disrupting daily life, unlike traditional methods. Developed by Anukool Lakhina and Waleed Haddad post-2020 Northern California fires, the BurnBot aims to eliminate flammable grasses near homes and highways, thereby reducing ignition risks from vehicles and equipment.
Recent demonstrations in Thousand Oaks attracted attention from various wildfire management officials. The BurnBot can run in hotter conditions and is better at destroying invasive plant seeds than traditional methods, such as mowing or herbicides. While ongoing research aims to evaluate its impact on land recovery, early indicators suggest the return of fire-resilient species.
Plans for expansion include increasing the fleet from five to 15 units next year and 50 the following year. Lakhina emphasized the need for innovative solutions to combat California’s wildfire challenges.
