Idaho Senators Mike Crapo and Jim Risch have introduced the Headwaters Protection Act, a bipartisan effort aimed at enhancing forest and watershed protection through expanded U.S. Forest Service programs. Partnering with other Democratic senators, they seek to combat water pollution and improve watershed health.

Crapo emphasizes the importance of local collaboration without federal control over private lands. The bill, previously introduced in 2023, now focuses on increased funding for watershed restoration projects and the Watershed Condition Framework.

Risch noted that well-managed national forests are vital for clean drinking water and irrigation. The act prioritizes projects enhancing water quality, wildfire resilience, and reducing financial barriers for participation. Luján highlighted that safeguarding watersheds ensures reliable access to clean water.

Overall, the legislation aims to foster partnerships among communities, tribes, and federal agencies to improve water quality and reduce pollution at its source.
