Grants have been awarded in several Pennsylvania counties for projects aimed at reclaiming abandoned coal mine lands, addressing the state’s significant environmental challenges. Pennsylvania holds the largest number of abandoned coal mines in the U.S., necessitating around $5 billion for reclamation efforts. Since 2022, over $700 million has been allocated through the Bipartisan Infrastructure, Investment, and Jobs Act for these initiatives.

DEP Secretary Jessica Shirley emphasized that reclaiming these lands not only restores the environment but also enhances community well-being and creates jobs. The funding addresses human health risks and supports emergency situations, such as mine subsidence. The DEP is currently accepting applications for the next round of reclamation grants, with a deadline of October 24, aiming to further improve water quality and ecosystem recovery.
