The Chesapeake Bay is showing improved health trends, receiving a C grade in the University of Maryland’s annual report, unchanged from 2021. The Bay’s health score has risen by six points recently, with better water clarity, nitrogen, phosphorus, and aquatic grasses. However, many tributaries, especially in the Eastern Shore, still struggle with poor scores. U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen emphasized the need to maintain and increase preservation efforts to support the economy and environment.

Watershed health was assessed in three categories—Ecological (B-), Societal (C), and Economic (C)—with the Eastern Shore performing worse across all. The new Environmental Justice Index reveals disparities in pollution impacts based on social factors like poverty and health, highlighting inequality in environmental burdens. Chesapeake Bay Foundation President Hilary Harp Falk stressed the need for greater investment in pollution control and climate resilience. The comprehensive report aims to ensure equitable community health and effective restoration for the Bay’s future.
