The Walla Walla basin, straddling Oregon and Washington, faces chronic water scarcity, affecting local communities. In response, Washington’s Department of Ecology is granting $1.46 million to ten restoration projects, while Oregon’s House Bill 5006 adds $2.5 million for similar initiatives. This collaboration among Washington, Oregon, and the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation (CTUIR) aims to enhance water management and restore habitats.

Ecology Director Casey Sixkiller emphasized the importance of joint efforts to address water supply challenges. Projects funded include fish passage improvements, water quality monitoring, and restoring habitats. These initiatives align with the Walla Walla Basin Watershed Strategy, showcasing a commitment to community involvement in water conservation. Overall, the funding will significantly impact long-term water management and ecosystem health in the region.
