Brandywine River Trust Enhances Fish Migration and Water Quality by Removing Second Dam

The Brandywine River Restoration Trust (BRRT) is dismantling Dam 6, also known as the DuPont Experimental Station Dam, on the Brandywine River. Constructed in 1839, this dam, along with others built in the late 1700s and early 1800s, was originally designed to power local mills. However, these structures have since become barriers to the river’s health, disrupting natural water flow and hindering fish migration. The removal of Dam 6 is part of BRRT’s broader restoration project aimed at restoring fish migration, improving water quality, and reconnecting the Brandywine River. The process involves carefully dismantling the center section of the dam while preserving portions on each side to maintain its historical significance. Signage will be installed to educate the public about the dam’s history and its role in the region’s industrial past. This initiative follows the successful removal of Dam 1 in 2019, marking a significant step toward ecological restoration in the area. (vista.today)
