West Michigan students in environmental classes are collaborating with Ottawa County on a “citizen science project” to assess road salt overuse in the Pigeon River watershed. Through the Ottawa Area Intermediate School District’s Careerline Tech Center, they aim to understand the environmental impact of road salt, which, while useful for melting ice, can pollute freshwater systems. High chloride levels from road salt harm aquatic life and disrupt ecosystems. Students will collect water quality data this spring, building on last year’s research, and have also presented their findings to raise public awareness. They distributed “salt watch” kits for community testing and emphasized the importance of reducing salt usage. The project enhances students’ skills in environmental science, helping prepare them for future careers. Upon completing the program, students can earn college credits from Grand Valley State University.
