Innovative Approaches To Great Lakes Watershed Science

The Great Lakes Watershed Institute (GLWI) will open a new, state-of-the-art lab at Alma College in August 2026. The lab aims to enhance student research and community partnerships by focusing on watershed science, directly addressing ecological challenges impacting the Great Lakes. It will feature 16 research stations and flexible teaching spaces, allowing students to engage with real data and local stakeholders.

The GLWI provides opportunities for paid summer research and internships, helping students gain valuable experience and build strong résumés. Many graduates have co-authored publications and presented at conferences, leading to advanced studies at reputable institutions.

Additionally, the GLWI promotes collaboration with community colleges and K–12 schools, creating pathways for students interested in environmental science. Overall, the institute is cultivating a network focused on freshwater sustainability and regional impact.
