The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has awarded a $90,000 grant to the San Elijo Lagoon Conservancy in Encinitas for the “Our Living Watershed” project, aimed at enhancing environmental education for grades 3-5 at four underserved elementary schools in Escondido. This initiative will include field trips, family events, teacher training, and engage around 1,500 students, 50 teachers, and 300 families.
The project addresses environmental issues in the Escondido Creek watershed, such as waste disposal and climate change, through education to foster a conservation ethic among young students. Doug Gibson, executive director of the Conservancy, emphasized the program’s role in promoting a cleaner future. The Conservancy will collaborate with various organizations to implement the project, which is one of four selected from over 75 applications in the region.
