Residents in Northwest Indiana are concerned about water consumption from large data centers, which can use up to 5 million gallons daily. Amazon is initiating projects to enhance water retention and restore native vegetation in the Kankakee River watershed. These efforts aim to improve habitats for over 1,000 species and enhance regional water retention by 110 million gallons annually, equivalent to a year’s usage for 1,000 households. Amazon plans to be water-positive by 2030, using AI for efficient irrigation and partnering on smart wetlands to reduce nutrient runoff. The company is pursuing 30 nationwide water replenishment projects to conserve and return over 14 billion liters of water to communities.
