A section of the Elizabeth River shoreline in Norfolk has been restored through a collaboration between Norfolk Southern and the Elizabeth River Project. The restoration, which began in 2020, spans 1,500 feet and includes nine acres of marshland and native grasses, aimed at strengthening against water level rise and improving water quality.
Speakers at a recent ribbon-cutting highlighted the environmental impact, including seven acres of oyster reefs that help filter water. Project leaders noted the rising sea levels in Hampton Roads underscored the importance of such initiatives. Over 100 trees were planted, enhancing the locale further. Additionally, the project qualifies for Virginia’s Nutrient Credit Program, enabling Norfolk Southern to offset costs.
