New York University has established the Simons Center for Computational Geophysical Flows, funded by a five-year, $10 million grant from the Simons Foundation. This center aims to advance research and training in computational methods addressing planetary climate predictions and geophysical flow patterns affecting weather and climate.

Understanding these flows is critical as they influence global circulation, extreme weather events, and ecosystem health, impacting safety and economic stability. Recent advancements in applied mathematics, computer science, and AI promise to enhance predictions of Earth’s complex climate dynamics.

Led by Laure Zanna, the center will innovate methodologies that merge physics-based approaches with AI, improving climate modeling and informing policymakers. The center focuses on two primary axes: multiscale interactions in geophysical flows and the physics of rare events, crucial for predicting phenomena like heatwaves and extreme precipitation.

The center will foster interdisciplinary training, host international workshops, and support postdoctoral researchers, ensuring future scientists are equipped to address ongoing climate challenges. Overall, it aims to position NYU as a leader in climate science.
