The Upper Provo Stewardship Project in Utah treated 3,873 acres to demonstrate the importance of holistic forest management, which goes beyond simply planting trees. The project included juniper removal, conifer thinning, aspen enhancement, and wetland restoration. This comprehensive approach aimed to improve wildlife habitat, protect water resources, and enhance wildfire management.

During the 2024 Yellow Lake Fire, which burned over 33,000 acres, areas treated in this project experienced altered fire behavior and effective fuel breaks, allowing firefighters better control. The restoration methods targeted various landscape needs, acknowledging the interconnectedness of forests, water, and wildlife.

Wetland restoration played a crucial role by improving water quality and preventing erosion. The project also highlighted the significance of collaboration among organizations to share resources and expertise for effective landscape restoration. The success of the project exemplifies how coordinated efforts can enhance resilience in ecosystems, ultimately benefiting wildlife and communities.

Continual monitoring and future treatments will be necessary to maintain the gains achieved, ensuring the watershed remains healthy and capable of withstanding disturbance.
