The Watershed Restoration Initiative, established in 2006 in Utah, focuses on improving watershed health, water quality, and wildlife habitats through partnerships. Successful projects have included wildfire restoration, stream improvements, and habitat enhancements across nearly 2.7 million acres. From 2023 to 2024, the initiative tackled wildfire effects on over 23,000 acres, seeding 442,572 pounds of seed and completing 148 restoration projects, enhancing 119 miles of streams and creating approximately 835 jobs, funded by over $48 million from more than 80 partners. These efforts, including prescribed burns and dam-mimicking structures, increase biodiversity and resilience against wildfires while improving water supply. The initiative serves as a model for other states, although funding coordination can be complex.
