Assemblywoman Alexandra M. Macedo (R-Tulare) introduced legislation to shift $1 billion in annual funding from the California High-Speed Rail Authority to wildfire prevention and water infrastructure projects, citing devastating wildfires affecting Southern California communities. Both Macedo and Congressman Vince Fong emphasized the urgent need for better resource allocation to mitigate wildfire risks and improve water management. The proposed Assembly Bill 267 aims to reappropriate High-Speed Rail funding, which has faced significant budget overruns and criticized effectiveness, to prioritize safety and infrastructure improvements. Macedo argued that the current spending on High-Speed Rail is a misuse of taxpayer dollars, advocating for a focus on protecting lives and property.
