The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) of Indonesia has issued a warning about potential extreme weather events during the upcoming Christmas and New Year holiday season. Head of BMKG, Dwikorita Karnawati, cautioned that hydrometeorological disasters like floods and landslides could occur due to a combination of weather factors, including the La Nina phenomenon, which is expected to increase rainfall by 40%.

Additionally, the agency is monitoring the effects of the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) and Cold Surges from the Asian continent that may intensify rainfall. The peak rainy season is anticipated to last from November 2024 to February 2025, further compounded by warmer-than-normal sea surface temperatures. The BMKG encourages the public to stay informed on weather updates through their @infobmkg application, which provides real-time information on such weather conditions and hazards.
