A recent study published in Applied and Environmental Microbiology indicates significant microbial impairment in Delaware’s inland waterways, primarily attributed to human waste, both treated and untreated. Researchers collected water samples over two years from three different watersheds, analyzing microbial DNA signatures. The findings revealed that the microbial communities closely matched human waste rather than animal waste, suggesting that infrastructural issues, particularly with septic systems, may be contributing to the contamination. The study emphasizes the need for better monitoring and maintenance of septic systems to address water quality concerns in Delaware.
