On February 26, 2025, a ground-breaking ceremony was held for the Bison Range Reach Project aimed at restoring the Jocko River and its floodplain. Allen Pierre, a Nkwusm instructor, led the event with a prayer, followed by a drum group’s performance honoring the land. Victoria White from NRD DEWR emphasized the project’s significance for future generations and the youth present, while Tabitha Espinoza discussed improvements to the river ecosystem. The project, part of broader efforts by the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes, will restore habitats for the threatened Bull Trout and Westslope Cutthroat Trout. Construction will occur in two phases, with public access closed for safety; Phase One is scheduled from March to June 2025 and September 2025 to January 2026. For more details, interested parties can contact Victoria White.
