Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass faced significant backlash for being in Ghana during the deadly wildfires that erupted on January 7. Critics questioned her decision to cut the Fire Department’s budget by $17.6 million before the fires and expressed outrage over her absence while residents faced destruction. Upon her return, Bass was met with confrontational media questioning her lack of apology and regrets about her trip. Calls for her resignation grew, with a Change.org petition gathering over 152,000 signatures. Despite the criticism, California Governor Gavin Newsom commended Bass for her leadership during the crisis. Bass stated her goal is to regain public trust, and efforts for recovery and rebuilding in affected areas are ongoing.
