California lawmakers are urging Congress to continue federal funding for disaster aid following the recent Los Angeles wildfires. All 54 members of the state’s congressional delegation signed a letter requesting resources for ongoing recovery efforts after the fires in January. President Biden has committed federal support for disaster costs through June, but uncertainty remains regarding potential conditions imposed by the Trump administration for continued aid. During a recent visit to the disaster area, Trump pledged substantial support, but his administration has hinted at attaching conditions to future funding, including limitations on the California Coastal Commission. Governor Gavin Newsom echoed the need for unity in crisis and has requested nearly $40 billion in federal aid. As Congress faces budget negotiations, the continuity of federal support remains critical for California’s recovery.
