In Petaluma, Calif., a student-led program is revitalizing local streams and creeks, focusing on the restoration of Steelhead Trout populations. Led by biologist Ellie Slick at Casa Grande High School, students operate a fish hatchery, tag fish, and have recently begun releasing them back into the watershed. Director Dan Hubacker highlights this development as a significant step forward in moving from monitoring to active restoration. The program, supported by grants from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, aims to collect data on Steelhead Trout migration patterns. Students like Chelsea Williams and Lucy James express their commitment to environmental conservation and the impact of their work in this long-standing initiative.
