The University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science (UMCES) has released its 19th annual Chesapeake Bay and Watershed Report Card, with the Bay receiving a grade of C (50%) and the Watershed a C+ (57%). Despite a slight decline from last year, the report highlights long-term improvements in several ecological metrics driven by successful management efforts, including upgrades in wastewater treatment and restoration initiatives. The document serves as a critical tool for policymakers and conservationists as Chesapeake Bay restoration goals approach in 2025.

Key concerns include the impacts of extreme weather on Bay health and societal issues like income inequality and heat vulnerability. Six regions show positive trends, and ongoing collaboration among local organizations is deemed essential for future improvements. As UMCES celebrates its centennial, the report card reflects both historical progress and future commitments towards a healthier Chesapeake Bay.
