In November, voters will consider Proposition 137, redirecting $175 million to $180 million in existing sales taxes from sporting goods toward land conservation and wildfire mitigation. The increased funds would benefit programs like Colorado Parks and Wildlife’s grants and support community projects. Proponents argue this could lead to extensive improvements in conservation efforts and wildfire risk management, while critics express concern over the permanent allocation of funds from the state budget. The initiative would not raise taxes but reallocate existing revenue, allowing for flexibility in state budgeting during low-revenue years. The measure has garnered significant financial backing, with no organized opposition as of now.
