The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection has awarded Columbia County a $148,726 grant to improve water quality and restore impaired watersheds. DEP Secretary Jessica Shirley emphasized that clean water is essential for community health. The grant supports projects under the Section 319 Nonpoint Source Management Grant program, aimed at mitigating nonpoint source pollution like stormwater runoff and mine drainage. Columbia County Conservation District will use the funds to update the Catawissa Creek Watershed Implementation Plan (WIP), originally completed in 2007, to include current data on water quality, land use, and pollution remediation efforts in both Columbia and Schuylkill counties.
