On June 22, 2023, RIKEN scientists announced a method to mitigate extreme weather events like torrential rain by leveraging chaos in weather systems. Led by Takemasa Miyoshi, their research, part of a Japanese government-funded program, builds on a previous study using the Lorenz 63 model. The recent study employs the more complex Lorenz 96 model, which simulates interactions at 40 points along a latitude.

The team demonstrated that small adjustments in wind speed could prevent significant weather changes by strategically influencing the chaotic system. Miyoshi emphasized the appeal of making targeted, minimal interventions over large-scale geoengineering, which carries high costs and risks. Future experiments will focus on realistic models, while acknowledging ethical and social implications of their approach.
