In March 2025, natural resource professionals from Tigray participated in a “Training of Trainers” on sustainable land management in Wukro, organized by CIFOR-ICRAF. The training aimed to enhance local skills through the Integrated Climate-Smart Livelihood Improvement Program. After classroom instruction, participants visited the Gergera watershed, showcasing effective restoration practices through community efforts. They observed features like conservation-based terraces and a unique water harvesting reservoir designed to support irrigation.
Key figures, including Niguse Hagazi, guided discussions on successful erosion control measures funded by Irish Aid. Participants noted significant ecological improvements over the past decade, such as increased greenery and water availability. Training also covered practical tools like the Regreening Africa App and the Land Degradation Surveillance Framework for long-term monitoring. Additionally, sessions focused on Rural Resource Centres to enhance seedling supply chains and support farmers.
A second training round for local leaders included hands-on learning and demonstrations of agroforestry techniques. Participants expressed enthusiasm about implementing new strategies across Tigray, marking a shift from isolated efforts to a broader restoration movement in the region.
