With an unusually dry winter, San Miguel County faces a heightened wildfire risk this summer. The county has invested significantly in wildfire mitigation, collaborating with the U.S. Forest Service to enhance preparedness. A recent presentation highlighted the use of Geographic Information System (GIS) mapping and Potential Operational Delineations (PODS) as tools for planning fire control strategies. Commissioner Galena Gleason emphasized the importance of integrating technology to bolster emergency responses. PODS, which utilize both natural and manmade features for fire containment, aim to prepare strategies before fires occur. This proactive approach blends local fire knowledge with spatial analytics, enabling quicker responses when wildfires ignite. The program seeks to improve fire outcomes rather than eliminate fire, utilizing local expertise to inform broader landscape strategies.
