The Canadian Red Cross has launched a program offering financial assistance to residents affected by the 2023 Nova Scotia wildfires, aimed at making homes less vulnerable to future fires. Opened on July 22, it targets homeowners in Upper Tantallon, Hammonds Plains, and Shelburne County who previously registered with the organization. Eligible applicants can receive up to $3,000 for remediation measures on homes that were not significantly damaged. Vice-president Bill Lawlor emphasized the importance of preparedness for potential future fires. Funding is sourced from donations and government contributions. Eligible activities include removing combustible materials and roof replacements, with the application deadline set for October 31, 2025. Projects must be completed by September 2026. Over 25,000 hectares and 200 homes were destroyed in the 2023 wildfires.
