Firefighters are battling wildfires near Athens and on Crete, prompting evacuations of over 5,000 people from resorts. In Ierapetra, tourists and locals fled, with some rescued from the sea. The fires have damaged properties, and volunteers reported farm animal casualties. A separate fire near Rafina disrupted ferry services. Concurrently, wildfires in Turkey resulted in two fatalities, with hundreds of firefighters engaged in containment efforts. Turkey’s parliament has passed a climate law targeting net-zero emissions by 2053 amid escalating wildfire threats due to climate change. Experts warn that Turkey faces increasing vulnerabilities related to extreme weather and drought.
