The National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) announced nearly $1.2 million in grants aimed at restoring rivers, improving grassland ecosystems, and supporting native aquatic species in the Pecos River watershed (southeastern New Mexico and West Texas). Funded through the Pecos Watershed Conservation Initiative (PWCI), these grants will leverage an additional $1.5 million in matching contributions, totaling over $2.6 million for conservation efforts.
Key goals for the funding include enhancing grassland management, increasing connectivity for pronghorn movements, addressing conservation knowledge gaps, and strengthening aquatic habitats critical for endangered species like the Pecos gambusia. The projects will involve collaboration among state agencies, nonprofit organizations, and corporate partners, aiming to demonstrate the positive impact of public-private conservation efforts.
Since its inception in 2018, PWCI has invested nearly $14.9 million in 66 projects across the watershed, focusing on both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems.
