Greece is currently experiencing a severe wildfire crisis, with 82 new fires reported in a single day, exacerbated by extreme weather, including strong winds and intense heat. Key areas like Patras and the Peloponnese are heavily affected, and ongoing evacuation efforts have been necessary. Nearly 5,000 firefighters, supported by aerial units, are working to combat the flames, which threaten both mainland and island regions.
Greece has sought assistance from other EU countries and requested additional firefighting aircraft. Elsewhere in Europe, wildfires are prevalent, with serious incidents in Spain, Italy, and other nations facing high temperatures and heat alerts. Tragically, casualties have resulted from wildfire-related incidents, including fatalities in Spain and Montenegro. Firefighting efforts are hampered by continual heat and dry conditions across the affected areas.
