The Chesapeake Bay Foundation’s “Roots to Reef” initiative has reached a milestone in climate resilience efforts along the Hampton River. The project has successfully deployed 650 innovative Natrx Basalt Shell Bags as part of a living shoreline strategy, which includes 5,584 oyster castles and other eco-friendly materials. These basalt shell bags, made from volcanic rock and filled with recycled oyster shells, provide a stable foundation for young oysters while promoting better water flow and protection against erosion.

The initiative addresses pollution and supports local ecosystems, leveraging natural solutions to filter contaminants and enhance marine habitats. This collaboration marks the first joint effort between the Foundation’s Oyster and Urban Restoration Teams, showcasing the integration of advanced materials to combat climate change impacts on coastal communities.
