South Korea deployed two helicopters to combat a wildfire in the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) and notified North Korea about the operation. The fire, which ignited in Goseong county, follows recent devastating wildfires in South Korea. The military reported that the blaze was about half controlled and that firefighting efforts were proceeding well without impacting personnel or facilities. The DMZ, a heavily militarized area from the 1953 Korean War Armistice, remains largely untouched and is known for its wildlife. Tensions have escalated recently, with North Korea increasing nuclear activities and abandoning diplomatic reunification efforts. Earlier in the week, South Korean forces fired warning shots at North Korean soldiers crossing the demarcation line before they retreated.
