The West Maui watershed restoration project, co-managed by Aloha Puʻu Kukui and The Nature Conservancy, engages Native Hawaiian students in efforts to restore over 9,000 acres of land previously used for pineapple cultivation. The initiative emphasizes the interconnectedness of healthy forests and ocean ecosystems. Students from Lahainaluna High School’s Hawaiian language immersion program learn to replace invasive species with native plants, fostering a connection to their heritage. This community involvement aims to enhance water capture, promote conservation, and honor ancestral stewardship practices. The project reflects a commitment to ecological restoration and cultural education, aiming to create a contiguous forest from mountain to ocean.
