The UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center (TERC) aims to restore Clear Lake’s oxygen quality amid challenges like excess nutrients, high mercury levels, and low dissolved oxygen. Research indicates that phosphorus harming water quality originates from lakebed soil, prompting the development of a hypolimnetic oxygenation system (HOS) to combat eutrophication. Set for installation in the Oaks Arm, the HOS aims to enhance oxygen levels at the lake’s bottom, addressing the stratification that leads to low oxygen conditions. Project managers, including Steve Camden, emphasize using technological modeling to optimize the system’s effectiveness, monitoring water quality continuously. The HOS is projected for construction this winter, with operations commencing in spring. More details can be found at clearlakerehabilitation.ucdavis.edu.
