A portable 20-by-20-foot unit has been set up in Lahaina as a temporary library following the destruction of the former Lahaina Public Library in the 2023 wildfire. The Hawai’i State Public Library System aims to open this unit, which still requires electrical and technological improvements, by early next year. It will offer a small collection of books, computers, Wi-Fi, and air conditioning, alongside outdoor seating. The unit cost $70,000 and is designed for rapid deployment in emergencies. Planning is ongoing for a permanent location, with a partnership continuing with the Judiciary for interim storytime sessions. State Librarian Stacey Aldrich emphasized the community’s need for library access.
