The US Forest Service has closed the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness due to approximately 20 wildfires in the region. Governor Tim Walz has requested National Guard assistance, while local outfitter Ginny Nelson works to inform and rebook customers affected by the closure.
Firefighter safety is paramount, prompting this decision as 16 active wildfires are reported, with some contained and others remaining difficult to access due to their remote locations. Firefighting tactics vary based on location, utilizing aerial support and heavy equipment.
Current conditions include red flag warnings with low humidity and high temperatures, heightening fire danger due to dry vegetation. The Minnesota Interagency Command System coordinates wildfire response, with crews from other states assisting. Evacuation alerts have been issued for St. Louis County residents near the fires.
