In July, severe wildfires devastated the mountainous forests of Latakia, Syria, amid the worst drought in nearly 40 years. Fueled by high temperatures and strong winds, the fires consumed 15,000 hectares, affecting over 17,000 people and displacing nearly 2,800. The destruction included homes, crops, and infrastructure, leaving many without livelihoods.

Local farmers shared their harrowing experiences, describing how the fire overran their communities. In response, the Danish Refugee Council (DRC), supported by the EU, deployed emergency teams to provide immediate assistance. They distributed hygiene kits and emergency cash to hundreds of families and offered psychosocial support to help the most vulnerable.

Rebuilding is a daunting challenge for the affected communities, which struggle to recover from nearly 14 years of conflict. Many families rely on assistance to restart their lives, facing a long and difficult road ahead.
