The Maryland Department of Natural Resources has rebranded its Chesapeake and Coastal Service to Watershed and Climate Services (WCS) to better reflect its mission in addressing climate change and fostering community resilience. This change aligns with the department’s focus on healthy watersheds and the well-being of all Maryland residents. Secretary Josh Kurtz emphasized the urgent need to combat climate change impacts such as flooding and rising sea levels.

WCS will strengthen shorelines, fund stream restorations, advance environmental education, and oversee large-scale projects, including the Whole Watershed Act. The rebranding signifies a commitment to comprehensive watershed management across the state, recognizing that water issues are interconnected. Dr. Natalie Snider noted the importance of a holistic approach, supporting partnerships and providing resources to tackle watershed and coastal challenges.
