A technological error mistakenly sent an emergency alert to all Los Angeles County residents on January 9, instead of just those near a wildfire. The alert, intended for San Fernando Valley residents facing evacuation due to the Kenneth Fire, caused confusion after recent devastating wildfires. According to a congressional report by Rep. Robert Garcia, the notification was improperly coded, failing to include specific geographic information, likely due to issues with the software provider Genasys. The report emphasized the need for clearer, more location-specific alerts and improved training for emergency officials. It also noted delays in notifications during other fires in the region, prompting LA County to conduct an independent review of its emergency protocols. The report stresses the importance of modernizing alert systems to prevent future incidents.
