A study published in Geophysical Research Letters indicates that North Atlantic sea surface temperatures can predict extreme climate events, such as reduced rainfall and severe drought, in Northeast Brazil up to three months in advance. Researchers from Brazil, China, Australia, and Germany utilized a novel methodology focusing on precipitation deficits, revealing that the influence of the North Atlantic is now more significant than that of the Pacific, traditionally seen as a key factor in regional droughts.

The research was inspired by the intense 2012-2015 drought, which devastated agriculture and water supplies. It demonstrated that interactions between tropical ocean basins have intensified drought conditions in recent decades. The study suggests that conventional forecasting methods should evolve to account for these new insights, considering both oceanic impacts and land-use changes.

The findings underscore the need for improved forecasts to aid public policy and mitigate extreme weather effects. The research highlights the complex interplay of ocean temperatures and atmospheric conditions in driving regional climate phenomena.
