The DNR is aerially seeding burned areas to prevent floods and mitigate future fires, particularly in the Red Cliffs Desert Reserve, which is vital for native wildlife like the desert tortoise. Invasive cheatgrass poses significant fire risks, and the DNR plans to treat 20,000 acres across the reserve using herbicides. Despite challenges from reduced federal funding, the DNR aims to treat 50,000 acres next year under the Watershed Restoration Initiative, which is funded through state and partner contributions. The agency may face future project cuts if federal funds are not restored.
