The National Forest Foundation (NFF) is supporting the Shelikof Stream Project in Southeast Alaska, in collaboration with the Sitka Conservation Society. The project aims to restore the Shelikof stream on Kruzof Island, which has suffered from extensive timber harvesting and stream cleaning, resulting in inadequate salmon spawning habitats. Ariel Miller, related to a local construction company, emphasized the project’s focus on enhancing fish habitats. Contrary to previous beliefs, debris in streams is now understood to create essential pools for salmon spawning. The Sitka Ranger District is working with TM Construction to reintroduce wood structures to improve habitat quality.
