During the June 4 meeting, the Middle Colorado Watershed Council presented its plans to restore Rifle Creek to the Rifle City Council. Key challenges for the watershed include ecological stress, aging infrastructure, and pressures from climate change. Wes Collins emphasized the need for restoration, highlighting issues like invasive species and the creek’s deepening channel. The Council’s Master Plan for Resilience aims to improve the creek’s health and align with Colorado’s Water Plan, focusing on infrastructure upgrades, habitat restoration, and water quality monitoring.

Funding sources are being explored, including grants from the Colorado Water Conservation Board and Great Outdoors Colorado. Initial projects will take place in various locations, aiming to enhance water flow, quality, and biodiversity. Council members expressed support for collaboration, discussing how the city can assist in these restoration efforts. No formal action was taken, but there was a collective eagerness to move forward with the initiative.
